Electrical Panel – What to Do When Your Breaker Trips

Home School Care & Maintenance

As part of our Home Warranty Series, we've come up with step-by-step maintenance video guides for common house hold problems. In this video, you'll learn how to reset your electrical panel's circuit breaker when it trips.

Here's what to do when your circuit breaker trips:

1. Safety First! Turn off all the lights and appliances controlled by the tripped circuit.

2. Locate the circuit breaker.

3. Open up your electrical panel and look for the switch that is no longer at the “ON” position – whichever switch is facing a different direction than all the others.

4. Push the lever all the way to the “off” position then back “on”. This should completely reset that circuit.

5. To make sure everything is functioning properly, turn some of your appliances back on.
