5 Simple Maintenance Tips: Home Appliance Edition

Home School Care & Maintenance

Home appliances are part of your everyday life and should be taken care of. Here are simple maintenance tips to extend their expected lifespan, limit any major damage from occurring, and save on energy bills.

1. Washing Machine

Once a month, you should drain and clean out the filter at the base of your washing machine. This filter traps solid debris, such as hair, that gets trapped in your dirty laundry. If not frequently cleaned, the drainage system will be backed up and you may notice an odour coming from the drain.

2. Dryer

This one is simple but is often forgotten! Always be sure to empty the lint drawer every load and vacuum around the back of the dryer from excess lint once a month. This prevents your dryer from overworking (less energy consumed!) and in some cases, protects from house fires.

3. Fridge

Condenser coils can be found on the bottom front or back of the fridge, and they are what keeps your refrigerator cold. Be sure to clean these coils and the surrounding area from any collected dust and debris. When properly maintained, your fridge won’t require as much energy to keep cool. This should be done every six months.

4. Dishwasher

There’s a filter at the bottom of your dishwasher that filters any extra food scraps from your dirty dishes. This drain filter should be cleaned and emptied weekly to eliminate any smells or mold from growing. The easiest way to clean it is to remove it from the dishwasher and wash it in the sink with dish soap and a soft brush.

5. Hood Fan Filters

Hood fan filters don’t effectively work if they’re blocked from excess grease and grime. Dismount your hood fan and clean by soaking in hot water and dish soap. Some filters are even dishwasher safe, but first, be sure to check your owner’s manual for specific care instructions. This should be done every couple of months.

PRO TIP: Always reference your appliance manuals that come with your house when you move in - each appliance has specifics on warranty and conditions!

Appliances are an expensive part of your home, and they should be treated like it. For new homebuyers, there are extended appliance warranties available but it’s always a good idea to upkeep with these easy maintenance tips!
